How to Set Your Lineup

A step-by-step guide to setting the perfect fantasy football lineup. Master the 'Start Your Studs' rule, navigate injury reports, manage game times, and avoid the common mistakes that cost managers wins.

The Weekly Ritual Every Fantasy Owner Must Master

Setting your lineup is the most important thing you'll do each week in fantasy football.

Miss it, and your best players could be sitting on your bench while backups lose you the week.

The good news? Once you understand the basics, it takes less than 5 minutes per week.

Understanding Your Lineup Slots

Most standard leagues require you to start:

1 Quarterback (QB)

2 Running Backs (RB)

2 Wide Receivers (WR)

1 Tight End (TE)

1 Flex (RB/WR/TE) - Your choice!

1 Kicker (K)

1 Defense/Special Teams (DST)

Total: 9 starting spots

Everyone else on your roster sits on your bench. Bench players don't earn you points, even if they go off for 40!

The Golden Rules of Setting Lineups

Rule #1: Start Your Studs

Your first and second round picks? They start. Every week. Even in "bad matchups." Don't overthink it.

Rule #2: Check Injury Reports (Friday-Sunday)

Friday: First injury report drops

Saturday: Second injury report

Sunday morning: Final injury report (90 minutes before kickoff)

Player statuses:

Out = Definitely not playing, bench them

Doubtful = 25% chance, bench them

Questionable = 50/50, have a backup ready

Probable = 75%+ chance, usually good to start

Rule #3: Check Game Times Before Locking In

Once a player's game starts, they're locked. If you have a 1pm RB listed as Questionable, make sure you have a 4pm backup option ready.

Rule #4: Flex Your Highest Scorer

In your flex spot, play whoever you think will score the most points. Usually this is a RB over a WR.

Rule #5: Don't Forget Thursday Night Football

Thursday games start at 8:15 PM ET. If you have a Thursday player, make your decision Wednesday night!

The Weekly Lineup Checklist

Tuesday Night (11 PM)

☐ Process waiver wire claims

☐ Make initial lineup based on projections

Wednesday Evening

☐ Check if any of your players are in Thursday's game

☐ Set Thursday players in your lineup (or bench them)

☐ Check for any surprise injury news

Friday Morning

☐ Review first injury report

☐ Identify questionable players

Saturday Evening

Sunday Morning (90 min before 1 PM ET games)

☐ Check final injury reports and "inactives" lists

☐ Make last-minute lineup swaps if needed

☐ Lock in your lineup

☐ Optional: Set Monday night backup if you have flex options

Sunday 4 PM ET (if needed)

☐ If you have a late flex spot open, check early game scores

☐ Adjust if you need floor vs ceiling plays

How to Never Forget Again

Method 1: Phone Alarms

Set recurring alarms:

• Wednesday 7 PM: "Check Thursday players"

• Sunday 11:30 AM: "SET YOUR LINEUP NOW"

Method 2: Fantasy App Notifications

Turn on push notifications in your app for:

• Injury updates

• Lineup reminders

• Game time alerts

Method 3: Sunday Morning Routine

Make it a habit: Coffee → Check news → Set lineup → Enjoy games

Method 4: League Group Chat

Your league mates will remind you. They love when you forget and lose!

Common Lineup Mistakes Beginners Make

Forgetting to check for injuries on Sunday morning

Even if you set your lineup Wednesday, ALWAYS check again Sunday morning!

Starting players on bye weeks

Bye weeks are listed in your app. A player on bye = 0 points automatically.

Benching studs for "favorable matchups"

Your 2nd round pick facing a tough defense? Still start them over your bench player.

Starting questionable players in early games

If your 1 PM RB is questionable, consider starting a 4 PM player instead so you have more time to get info.

Not using your full roster

Leaving a starting slot empty = automatic loss. Always have someone in every spot!

Pro Tips for Lineup Decisions

Tip 1: Weather Matters

Heavy rain/wind hurts passing games. Benefits running backs. Check weather reports Sunday morning.

Tip 2: Vegas Lines Tell a Story

Teams favored by 10+ points will likely run the ball a lot in the 2nd half. Their RBs benefit.

Tip 3: Target High Over/Under Games

Games with high point totals (Over/Under of 50+) mean more fantasy points for everyone.

Tip 4: Start Players in Prime Time When Close

If you're 50/50 between two players, take the Monday/Thursday night guy for the fun factor.

Tip 5: When in Doubt, Trust Your Draft

You drafted certain players high for a reason. Trust your draft board over one week of hot takes.
