Trade Deadlines, Playoffs, and Your League Schedule

Master the fantasy football calendar, from regular season strategy and trade deadlines to playoff structures. Learn why Week 18 is avoided and how to optimize your schedule for a championship run.

Your Fantasy Football Season Schedule

The fantasy season follows the NFL regular season, but not exactly. Here's how it breaks down:

Regular Season: Weeks 1-14 (usually)

You play head-to-head matchups every week. Win or lose, you get a record (like 8-6).

Playoffs: Weeks 15-17 (usually)

Top 4-6 teams make playoffs. Single elimination or 2-week matchups. Winner takes the championship!

Week 18: Avoid It!

Most leagues END before Week 18 because NFL teams rest their starters.

What is the Trade Deadline?

The trade deadline is the last day you can trade players with other teams in your league.

Default Settings:

• ESPN: Usually end of Week 11

• Yahoo: Usually end of Week 11

• Sleeper: Customizable by commissioner

Why does it exist?

To prevent playoff teams from trading all their players to non-playoff teams (collusion). It keeps the league fair.

After the trade deadline:

You can still pick up free agents from the waiver wire, but you can't trade with other teams.

When Should You Make Trades?

Weeks 1-4: Early Season Trades

• Panic trades happen here (someone's stud has 2 bad games)

• Buy low on underperforming studs

• Sell high on overperforming bench players

Weeks 5-8: Mid-Season Moves

• Sample size is big enough to trust trends

• Target players with easy playoff schedules

• Consolidate depth into studs (2-for-1 trades)

Weeks 9-11: Deadline Push

• This is your LAST CHANCE to trade

• If you're 7-2, trade depth for elite studs

• If you're 2-7, trade studs for multiple depth pieces or just play spoiler

After Week 11: Waiver Wire Only

No more trades. Focus on streaming and finding handcuffs.

Understanding Playoff Structure

Most leagues use one of these formats:

4-Team Playoffs (Weeks 15-17)

• Top 4 teams make it

• Week 15: #1 vs #4, #2 vs #3 (semifinals)

• Week 16: Winners play for championship

• Week 17: Sometimes used for 3rd place game

6-Team Playoffs (Weeks 14/15-17)

• Top 6 teams make it

• Week 14/15: #3 vs #6, #4 vs #5 (wild card round)

• #1 and #2 get first-round bye

• Week 15/16: Semifinals

• Week 16/17: Championship

8-Team Playoffs (Rare)

• Half the league makes playoffs

• Week 14: Wild card round

• Week 15: Semifinals

• Week 16: Championship

Playoff Seeding & Tiebreakers

How do you make playoffs?

Usually based on your regular season record (wins and losses).

Tiebreakers (if two teams have same record):

  1. Total Points For - Team with more points all season wins

  2. Head-to-Head Record - Who won when you played each other?

  3. Points Against - Luck factor (lower is "unluckier")

Example:

Two teams are 7-7. Team A has 1,450 points. Team B has 1,380 points.

Team A gets the playoff spot because of more total points.

Why You Should Care About Playoff Schedules

Not all playoff matchups are equal. Some teams face tough defenses in Weeks 15-17.

Good Playoff Schedule Example:

Your RB1 plays:

• Week 15: vs Panthers (30th ranked run defense)

• Week 16: vs Giants (28th ranked)

• Week 17: vs Cardinals (25th ranked)

Bad Playoff Schedule Example:

Your RB1 plays:

• Week 15: vs 49ers (1st ranked run defense)

• Week 16: vs Ravens (3rd ranked)

• Week 17: vs Browns (5th ranked)

When to check this:

Around Week 8-10, start looking at playoff schedules for your players. Trade for players with easy schedules.

Week 18: Why Most Leagues Avoid It

Week 18 is the final week of the NFL regular season. Most fantasy leagues END at Week 16 or 17.

Why?

Teams that clinched playoffs rest their star players. You don't want your championship to be decided by backups playing.

Example (2023 Season):

• Eagles rested Jalen Hurts

• Bills rested Josh Allen

• 49ers rested Christian McCaffrey

Imagine losing your fantasy championship because your stud didn't even play. That's why leagues avoid Week 18.

Preparing for Playoffs: 3-Week Strategy

Week 11 (Trade Deadline Week):

• Make final trades for players with easy playoff schedules

• If you're locked into playoffs, trade bench depth for studs

• If you're out of playoff contention, just have fun and play spoiler

Weeks 12-14 (Final Push):

• Win as many games as possible to secure a top-2 seed (and maybe a bye week)

• Stash handcuff RBs in case of injuries

• Monitor injury reports closely

Weeks 15-17 (Playoffs):

• Start your studs, don't get cute

• Check weather reports (snow/wind games are brutal)

• Stream defenses against bad offenses

• NEVER LEAVE A BENCH SPOT EMPTY
